Can ChatGPT Replace Consultants?

Recently, a friend of mine, who works as a Delivery Manager for a mid-sized company, asked me: “Which are the core KPIs I should implement?” The question was out of the blue, followed by, “Let’s ask ChatGPT.” Of course, ChatGPT had an answer:

Production Efficiency (Throughput): Measures the rate of production and resource utilization, indicating process effectiveness.

Quality Yield (Defect Rate): Assesses the percentage of defect-free products, reflecting quality control success.

On-Time Delivery Rate: Tracks the timeliness of product deliveries, essential for customer satisfaction.

While ChatGPT can provide answers quickly, is this sufficient?

    The Consultant’s Approach

A consultant wouldn’t give a dry, context-less answer. Instead, the focus would be on outcomes and tailoring KPIs to the specific needs and goals of the business.

    Understanding the Context

Understanding the context is crucial. It is important first to analyze the current business environment, market conditions, and internal processes to identify areas that need improvement.

    Developing Custom KPIs

Create KPIs that directly measure progress towards these goals. For example, if the goal is to improve customer satisfaction, KPIs might include customer feedback scores or repeat purchase rates.

    Implementing Outcome-Based Strategies

To ensure successful implementation, it’s essential to integrate data-driven insights into everyday operations. This includes:

    • Data Collection and Analysis: Utilize advanced analytics tools to gather and interpret relevant data.
    • Agile Methodologies: Implement agile methods to stay flexible and responsive to changes.
    • Feedback: Conduct frequent reviews to track progress, identify successes, and make necessary adjustments.

What Would a Pragmatic Agilist Suggest?

Focusing on outcomes rather than predefined metrics ensures that KPIs are relevant, meaningful, and aligned with strategic goals. This outcome-oriented approach encourages ongoing improvement and adaptability, key to success in a rapidly changing market.
